Jon Hougen travel award

Hougen

Jon T. Hougen in 2004.

On January 28, 2019 Jon T. Hougen, who was a scientist emeritus Fellow at the National Institute for Standard and Technology (NIST, Gaithersburg, USA)  died of a sudden heart attack in Taipei, Taiwan, where he was attending a meeting of the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences as a member of the institute’s advisory board. He was 82 years old.

Jon Hougen changed the world of molecular spectroscopy with remarkable theoretical contributions for well over half a century.  From the electronic Jahn-Teller effect to Ro-Vibrational Large Amplitude Motions, Jon’s work illuminates many fascinating problems from simple to complex molecules. He was one of the world leaders in applying the mathematical field of group theory to gas-phase spectroscopy, to analyze and understand the spectral signatures of the motion, rotation and vibration of molecules.

Dr. Hougen has mentored many young scientists and graduate students from all around the world, promoting both excellence and ethics in science.

We are proud to announce that the HRMS Colloquium offers a special travel award this year*. Two students will be selected by the HRMS Committee to receive 450 € each to help them to participate the HRMS Conference which will be held in Dijon. The graduate students should apply for the award upon the abstract submission (see below for the procedure).

*Donations from Novol Co Ltd in Poznań (Poland) and Professor Marek Kręglewski.

The selected laureates will take the commitment to attend the HRMS conference in person.

The awardees will be mentioned in the Tuesday-evening session dedicated to Jon Hougen.

Selection criteria:

  • PhD students from any country should not having received their PhD degree at the date of the meeting.
  • The work should concern mainly theoretical developments and spectral analysis.
  • The selection committee will choose the two laureates on basis of the abstract together, with a nomination letter, and the CV of the candidates.

Submission of applications:

The candidates should apply when they submit their abstract. A dedicated checkbox "Jon T. Hougen Award Applicant" on the abstract submission page has been added.
